Watchling — embedded player identity

The embedded YouTube player inside the Watchling app identifies itself to YouTube as https://com.getwatchling.app/ in the HTTP Referer header. com.getwatchling.app is the app's ID in the Apple App Store. Our internal test builds identify themselves the same way with the IDs they install under, com.getwatchling.app.dev and com.getwatchling.app.preview. If you saw one of these on a request to YouTube, that request came from a Watchling install.

Watchling is a video app for children. Parents choose which kinds of video their child can see, and playback is always the official YouTube IFrame player streaming live — we never download, proxy, cache or re-host video.

The player page itself is built on the device and is not served from here. The app ID is used because Required Minimum Functionality asks an app that embeds the player to name itself by the ID it was installed under. This page is published so that the identity resolves to a real, checkable owner.
